Haiti and Hurricane Matthew

Many of you are asking for news about Haiti and how are our friends doing there?  Saturday night I spoke with Pastor Jeannius Jean Pierre who is the president of the AEM (L’Association des Eglises Missionnaires) our sister denomination in Haiti.  The AEM has 3 churches in the southern peninsula, one in Jacmel, one in Les Cayes and one in Benoit.  If you have been following the news you are aware that Les Cayes has been hit hard. Pastor Mertens from Les Cayes (in the department of the South said that their church had lost it’s roof.   Many people have lost their homes.  Pastor Jeannius said that Benoit, a smaller community up in the mountains in the department of the Nippes sustained significant damage as well.  People have lost their homes and their gardens.  It is still very difficult to communicate with these areas.   A bridge on the main highway leading from Port au Prince to the southern peninsula has been washed out.

Pastor Jeannius has called upon the 50 or so churches of the AEM in the central and northeastern areas of Haiti to give a special offering on Sunday, October 9, for relief efforts in the southwest of their nation.

Here in Canada, EMCC has also sent out an appeal for assistance for both our sister denominations in Cuba and Haiti.  Please consider giving toward this appeal:

Note that Les Cayes is in the Department of Sud, Jacmel in the Sud-Est.  Benoit is too small to be on the map but is located centrally in the Department of the Nippes which is north of the Sud.

Please pray for relief efforts that have already begun.  Pray against corruption and mishandling of funds and supplies that will be delivered to Haiti.  Pray for EMCC in deciding how to best use the funds that will be raised for both Cuba and Haiti.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support of EMCC Health and Community Development.  I appreciate your prayers as I discern how best to help in the community of Benoit.  I will be travelling there mid November with a small team.  These plans were made previous to the hurricane.  Pray for God’s direction as we consider how to bring assistance to Benoit and surrounding villages.   Pray for me for renewed energy and strength of body, soul and mind. Our medical team returned September 29 from an intense 3 weeks in Tanzania.  My theme song there was “Strength will rise as we wait upon the LORD.”

Isaiah 40:31  says “But those who trust (wait, hope) in the LORD will find new strength.

I will send out an update of the summer and Tanzania soon.

Blessings.  Marilyn
